Rim Joist Insulation

Rim joist insulation accounts for 36% of energy loss in homes making it a "2nd Priority" of the insulation envelope. The rim joist is the board located above the foundation around the perimeter of the home. This area is particularily vunerable to gaps, cracks and unsealed holes drilled for wire passes and pipes. Since fiberglass insulation is not able to stop air leaks, it is desirable to seal all gaps and cracks with a foam sealant or caulk if fiberglass insulation is used. Air sealing the rim joists is not standard practice in new home construction. Our recomendation for insulating rim joists is R-21.
